The relation between swelling of coal and the sorption of fluids flowing through it

Author: M. Sławomirski

The purpose of the paper is to determine the mathematical form of the relation between the sorption of fluid in coal and the coal swelling. The notions of external and internal swelling have been introduced. The magnitude of sorption defined as the standard volume of fluid sorbed within the unit of mass of sorbing material has been accepted as the primary parameter characterising the sorption. The variability of coal porosity has been accepted as the primary parameter characterising the internal swelling and/or shrinkage process. Basing the information about empirical measurements confirming the linear dependence of swelling on sorption, and introducing non-dimensional parameters the explicit formula (6) expressing the dependence of porosity of coal on fluid pressure and involving the sorption isotherm has been obtained.
