Deformational Properties of Flysch Sandstones under Conventional Triaxial Compression Conditions

Auhtor: P. Łukaszewski

The process of deformation of fl ysch sandstones under conditions of conventional triaxial compression
is characterised in the paper. Samples of three types of clastic rocks varying in degree of diagenesis and
grain-size distribution were tested. The infl uence of confi ning pressure on the deformability and ultimate
strength of these rocks was investigated. In particular, the infl uence of confi ning pressure on critical axial
and circumferential strain, Young’s modulus, Poisson’s ratio, threshold of absolute dilatancy and limit of
linearity of the differential stress – axial strain characteristic was examined. The results of the research
undertaken show that weakly diagenesed clastic rocks of low strength feature high deformability and
fi ne-grained massive clastic rocks of high strength feature low deformability. In addition, the normalised
threshold of absolute dilatancy increases with an increase in confi ning pressure in the case of weakly
diagenesed rocks and decreases in the case of massive fi ne-grained clastic rocks.
