Selection and Underground Tests of the Rotary Tangential Cutting Picks used in Cutting Heads of the Longwall and Roadway Miners

Authors: K. Krauze, K. Kotwica

Rock mining with use of the rotary tangential cutting tools requires consideration of numerous factors
related with the tools itself, as well as their holders, head-types and rock body properties. Analysis of the
infl uence of construction, material and kinematics properties of the rotary tangential pick onto cutting
process and durability of the cutting element (cutting head) enabled to propose general procedure of the
cutting tool selection and assessment of its quality and durability as well. The procedures enable precise
defi ning of the requirements of ordered rotary tangential tools, including technical inspection procedure.
Moreover, results of underground tests of chosen rotary tangential picks actually used in longwall and
heading miners in selected Polish Coal Mines compared with new-generation rotary tangential tools
produced by Kennametal Company have also been presented. Moreover, infl uence of material type and
properties of sintered carbide inserts, including cutting pick body material, onto its qualitative and quantitative
wear have been presented.
