The relationship between the specific surface area of coal determined by nitrogen and carbon dioxide sorption and the susceptibility of coal to spontaneous combustion

Authors: J. Cygankiewicz, A. Dudzińska, M. Żyła

The results of a study regarding sorption of nitrogen and carbon dioxide on 18 samples of bituminous
coal are discussed in this paper. Correlation was found between specifi c surface area of coal, determined
from sorption of nitrogen and carbon dioxide and the susceptibility of coal to spontaneous combustion
determined according to the Polish Standard PN-93/G-04558. Basing on the specifi c surface area criterion,
a new classifi cation of bituminous coals was proposed, dividing them into four groups depending on their
spontaneous combustion susceptibility determined on the basis of their specifi c surface area obtained
from carbon dioxide sorption.
Keywords: bituminous coal, spantaneous combustion, diffusion of gases, specifi c surface area, porosity
