The statistical - bilance method of predicting open-pit mine flooding processes

Authors: K. Polak, J. Klich

This paper presents one method of forecasting fl ooding in open-cast mines, the Statistical Balance
Method. This method – using the equation of water balance discharge – was processed using data from
the initial fl ooding period of the (post-mining) open-pit “Pątnów”, in the Poznan region of Poland. The
parameters of this equation were determined using multiple regression. The quality of the prognostic
model was estimated ex ante based on statistical values. The next step involved ex post verifi cation of the
model, conducted by comparing the original forecast data to the results of the monitoring of the consequent
fl ooding of the open-pit mine over a period of 18 months. The updated prognosis of the fl ooding of the
“Pątnów” reservoir as well as the data concerning the subsequent and actual fl ooding of the reservoir is
hereby presented.
