Potential applications of image analysis and mathematical morphology to stereological analysis of rock structures

Apart from the qualitative description, certain quantitative parameters are required to make the de­scription of a rock structure complete. For that purpose most cumbersome and time-consuming stereolo-gical measurements are taken. The paper reviews the recent research programmes undertaken in the Strata Mechanics Research Institute to support those measurement through the application of computer-assisted methods of image analysis. Such approach facilitates the measurements, ensures their full repeatabi­lity and allows for describing rock geometry with a greater number of parameters than in the standard analysis. The paper briefly presents the algorithms for automatic analysis of rock structures, developed in the Strata Mechanics Research Institute. In the Laboratory of Micrometrics three research areas are emphasised: -stereological analysis of rock structure (example: Wisniowka, quartzite, Dąbek sandstone and other types of sandstone) -changes of the rock structure with the particular emphasis on cracks (Rzędziny dolomite and Strzelin granite) -description of the morphology of fractures (potential applications of the image analysis and mathematical morphology are explored) The results lead us to the conclusion that the methods of image analysis and mathematical morphology might be well utilised in metallurgy, biology and medicine and in the analysis of rock structures.
