Directional borehole diameter determination methods for individual stages of horizontal directional drilling

Author: R. Wiśniowski

The HDD processes have been studied at the Department of Drilling and Geoengineering, Faculty of Drilling, Oil and Gas, AGH-UST for years.

As a result a number of recommendations and new technological solutions applicable for HDD designing and performing, were worked out.

One of the major questions to be solved in practice is a selection of borehole diameters at all stages of drilling and reaming.

A method of determining individual borehole diameters for the criterion of equal mechanical power at all stages of reaming.

To cope with this problem, the power needed for drilling specific stages of HDD was analyzed.

Then relations were derived and block diagrams for numerical solution of these relations worked out.

The algorithms account for the influence of reamers.

Exemplary calculations were made for various reamer configurations.
