Thermal comfort and safety of miners on the salt mine "Polkowice-Sieroszowice" - selected aspects

Authors: J. Wacławik, L. Borodulin-Nadzieja, M. Branny, M. Kowalik

The deposit of salt is located in the northern part of the Legnica-Głogów Copper Region on the depth of 1000 m. The Polkowice-Sieroszowice Copper Mine has been carrying out mining works in the salt bed since 1991. In the workings driven from east to central part of the mine occur difficult thermal working conditions. The dry-bulb temperature is high and reaches 34--36C, wet-bulb temperature is moderate and equals to 23-K26 sup oC , the air velocity is equal to 0.5 m/s. Heat exchange between miner body and his environment was calculated for stationary state with the use of following general equation: M=?C?R+B+E where: M - metabolic heat production; C - convective heat exchange; R - heat exchange by radiation; B - heat loss by respiration; E - heat loss by evaporation. The temperature of skin of miner body, the skin wetness fraction, evaporative efficiency of sweating and loss of water in body due to evaporation was calculated for different environmental conditions. In the paper assumed that the measures of heat loads of miner body are values of the average temperature of skin and the loss of water in body due to evaporation.
