The paper presents a study of the sorption /desorption kinetics and equilibrium states with displacement of sorbate gases, as well as the dilatation/ contraction of coal accompanying the sorption processes under low pressures of the gases.

In order to find a correlation between the properties of hard coal and the process of methane liberation in the course of time.

Based on the results obtained it seems worth stressing that there exists a need to carry out parallel sorption dilatation studies as part of the structural study of hard coal.
